How a TTY bolt is different
A conventional fastener stays in the elastic range of the steel — you can torque it, remove it, and torque it again to spec because it springs back to its original length every time. A torque-to-yield fastener is designed to be pulled past the yield point on purpose, into the plastic range where the steel stays permanently stretched.
The tightening procedure gives away the design. TTY specs read something like: 22 ft-lb, plus 90 degrees, plus another 90 degrees. That final angular pass is where the bolt yields. It clamps beautifully — every fastener in the pattern ends up at nearly identical preload, which is why cylinder heads and main caps use them.
What happens when you reuse one
A reused TTY bolt has already been stretched once. Torquing it a second time either shears it in the pattern (you feel it as a sudden loss of resistance) or, worse, it holds during assembly and lets go 500 miles down the road when the head warps.
Head-gasket failures from reused TTY bolts almost never fail cold in the driveway. They fail on the customer at highway speed under load, and the callback pays worse than doing it right the first time.
How to identify a TTY bolt in the wild
If the service procedure specifies an angle after an initial torque value, it is TTY. If the bolt has a reduced-diameter shank between the head and the threaded section — that is a stretch zone — it is TTY. If the manufacturer sells the bolts in a set with the head gasket, they are TTY.
When in doubt, replace. A set of 10 head bolts costs less than a shop hour, and no scan tool will diagnose 'reused fastener.'
