Weight the study time correctly
Hydraulic system diagnosis and ABS/traction/stability control together account for more than half of the A5 questions. Machining and pad selection barely register. If your shop does mostly pad slaps you will feel prepared and then get crushed by the second half of the exam.
Study proportioning valve function, master cylinder bypass testing, and how a stability control module uses yaw, steering angle, and wheel speed inputs to trigger brake actuation on a single wheel.
The pedal feel questions
Expect two or three questions that describe a pedal symptom and ask for the most likely cause. Learn the four classic patterns cold. Low and firm equals air-free but out of adjustment. Low and spongy equals air in the system. Sinking pedal with no leak equals internal master cylinder bypass. High and hard equals a failed brake booster or vacuum supply.
ABS diagnostic strategy
ASE loves scenario questions where a wheel speed sensor code is set but the module also complains about a different wheel. The answer is usually to check the ground and reference circuits shared by both sensors before condemning a sensor. Modules rarely fail. Wiring and connectors do.
