ASE A2 Automatic Transmission Test: What Actually Shows Up

The A2 exam punishes memorizers and rewards technicians who understand hydraulic flow, planetary logic, and shift adapts. Here is what to study.

The four content areas you cannot skip

The A2 test is weighted heavily toward in-vehicle transmission diagnosis and repair, not bench overhaul. Roughly a third of the questions target electronic controls and shift solenoid diagnosis, and another third target hydraulic systems and pressure testing. If you only study clutch pack rebuild procedures you will fail the paper even if you are a great bench tech.

Spend real time on line pressure tests, TCC apply logic, and how the TCM uses input and output speed sensors to decide when to command a shift. Those concepts get tested in almost every scenario question.

Planetary gearsets the way ASE asks about them

ASE never asks you to name a Simpson or Ravigneaux set. They give you a member held, a member driven, and ask what the output does. Practice the three rules: hold the ring, drive the sun, and the carrier turns slowly in the same direction (reduction). Hold the carrier and you get reverse. Lock any two members together and you get direct drive.

Draw the gearset for every shift in a modern six-speed. If you can hand-draw first through sixth with which element is applied, you will answer four to six questions correctly without thinking.

Adaptive learning and the questions people miss

Modern transmissions relearn shift timing every few thousand miles. Questions often describe a soft, late 2-3 shift after a valve body replacement and ask what the tech should do first. The answer is almost always perform a TCM relearn, not replace the valve body again. Know the relearn procedure for at least one common platform and you will recognize the pattern instantly.
