The ASE Codex

A Field Guide to the Certification, the Craft, and the Career

The definitive free field guide for automotive technicians preparing for ASE certification. Thirty chapters spanning the history of ASE, the neuroscience of studying, every Automobile series (A1 to A9), plus surveys of the truck, collision, and service consultant credentials, closing with the craft, the career, and reference material for the bay. Written by working techs for working techs, mixing shop-floor voice with textbook rigor.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS

This is a book for the people who show up before the shop lights are all the way on, coffee in one hand, work order in the other. It is for the apprentice trying to make sense of a wiring diagram for the first time, the seasoned tech chasing a Master patch, the service writer trying to translate customer complaints into work that pays. It is for anyone whose next raise or next hire depends on a Blue Seal.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence has been the industry honest broker of technical competence since 1972. Its tests are not easy on purpose. They are the only universally recognized proof that a technician actually knows the craft. This book exists to help you earn that proof, and along the way to remind you why the craft is worth mastering in the first place.

HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED

The book is broken into six parts. Part I is the story. Part II is how to study. Part III is one chapter for each of the nine Automobile series (A1 to A9). Part IV is a survey of the truck (T), collision (B), and service consultant (C1) plus maintenance (G1) series. Part V is craft and career. Part VI is reference material you can come back to on the shop floor.

Read it front-to-back if you are new. Jump to your target series if you are studying for a specific exam. Bookmark the reference chapters. They are built for the bay, not just the test center.
